“So it wasn’t the testimony that was important. It was Reynolds’s furious outburst that mattered. The desperation of his plight had broken through his self-discipline and good nature. He really was fighting for his life. All he had ever achieved as a writer, correspondent, and public figure was in the balance. Unless he won this case, his reputation would be irretrievably lost.’’Nizer recounting the testimony of Quentin Reynolds during the jury trial to recover his reputation . . .“Men have found such a blank wall, particularly after high achievement, unfaceable. It was literally a struggle for survival and against most powerful forces.”This comment illustrates this special work. Nizer doesn’t just vividly draw fascinating portraits, he adds keen insights and intellectual analysis.Nizer’s concluding talk to the jury . . .“An assassin and a slanderer, ladies and gentlemen, are the same thing. They use different weapons. The assassin uses a gun and a slanderer uses his pen. When he uses a pen or a printing press and destroys the most precious thing a man has, his reputation, it is time that one of our juries, in their wisdom, made a lesson of that man by awarding punitive damages.”“When I sat down, Ginny and others were crying softly. We had done all we could to vindicate Reynolds. Our task was done.”Nizer is here presenting ethical/moral principles, not just emotional, heartfelt drama. For example . . .“One of my associates read a few sentences from the court minutes of my argument before the United States Court of Appeals: “The purpose of punitive damages is to punish and to act as a deterrent. Unless the damages ‘smart,’ unless they cause some pain to the defendants, there is no deterrent and no punishment.’’“Reckless attacks equivalent to character assassination have become too frequent an occurrence in personal column editorializing. Newspapers are like cannon. They must not be shot carelessly and with abandon.’’“This case afforded an opportunity to protect the individual from malicious libel; to inculcate a revived sense of responsibility in newspapers; to encourage the old tradition of checking facts, and to control reckless writers who build circulation by extremism and sensationalism.”Wonderful courtroom drama!REPUTATIONChapter One—THE LIBEL CASE OF QUENTIN REYNOLDS VS. WESTBROOK PEGLERDIVORCEChapter Two—THE “WAR OF THE ROSES” AND OTHERSTALENTChapter Three—THE CASE OF THE PLAGIARIZED SONGHONORChapter Four—ISSUE OF NAZISM IN AMERICALIFE AND LIMBChapter Five—TWO CASES OF NEGLIGENCEPROXY BATTLECHAPTER Six—THE STRUGGLED OVER LOEW’SVarious types of courtroom conflicts are related. Murderous slander, hateful divorce, deadly medical malpractice, deceitful Nazis, cruel corporate warfare, are all here and all are carefully, vividly, throughly drawn. Nizer includes much courtroom dialogue. Some a little involved (skipped) but a lot of fascinating, dramatic conflict! Viscous hatred, unbroken courage, craven cowardice, undying trust, painful betrayal, greed for power, loyal support, etc.,etc., are all here. One wonderful chapter on Professor Friedrich Foerster . . .“A glowing tribute from Professor Albert Einstein, delivered at Foerster’s eighty-fifth anniversary, was read. It contained the following:“You have always found the courage to speak the truth without hesitation, even if the truth was not too palatable for the groups you intended to reach. You have not shrunk from this sacred duty, even when you knew that you exposed yourself to the enmity of misguided majorities—nay, even if you literally sacrificed yourself to this duty which, alas, is so little appreciated.”Nizer comments . . .“One cannot control the length of one’s life, but one can control its depth and width.’’Great! No indexNo bibliographyNo photographs

This is one book that clearly proves that lawyers are not made of the same stuff. Like other well-rounded men, Louis Nizer was more than a brilliant legal mind----a great storyteller (like Gerry Spence) with incredible analytical skills, a psychologist and observer of the human condition. I bought this book over 40 years ago and re-discovered it during a move with renewed interest. Intrigued with the case involving the copyrights to "Rum and Coca Cola," I began reading and could not stop. After reading this book (and ordering all others by him)I realize he represents what I would call the Universal Mind. His works, which he wrote nearing retirement into his nineties make fictional law books dull. His colorful stories detailing landmark cases (about 5 chapters) with famous people, are brilliantly re-told and punctuated with numerous quotes of his own; are more than an elemental introduction to the legal profession. They make you want to crawl in front of a fireplace at night and inhale the wisdom of the ages sipping a fine cabernet. Even the final case involving the possible destruction of MGM studios as we knew it contains the most complicated legal maneuvering you will read, yet like a movie plot, Nizer has you interested until the end when the lion roars along with you. Louis Nizer is one of the most captivating minds I have read and I highly recommend his works to anyone who makes a study of unique brilliance. It is redundant to say he's a wonderful writer too.

Probably he was the best trial lawyer ever seen. Although -I think- his young figure was not impressive, as Nizer got older improved his appearance. Louis Nizer, in this book, creates his atmosphere for lawyering; mixing the recounting of the counsel with a special screenplay, just telling stories with amenity and craftsmanship.I reckon it seems a kind of dictated book (I don't know!), so long, but well supported, because Nizer uses a verbal style of narration, but, at the end, the story works, is a true one, and that matters to us.Louis Nizer has the appropriate ability to describe characters and phycology of many different people of all kinds; ; he takes emotions and facts, from the courtroom and real life.Every lawyer and prosecutor can pick many advises and lessons learning from the "life in court" of one of the greatest lawyers of the 20th century, like Clarence Darrow, Ed Williams an others...the forgotten Billy Fallon. Nizer masters cross-examinations and, as american lawyer, knows how to manage the jury and the court.Nizer is not a criminal lawyer but a civil one, expert in human rights -avant la lettre- family law, and intellectual property too.Know I need to read "Reflections without mirrors", just to carry on an everlasting conversation with the great lawyer...

As usual, fact is more fascinating that fiction. The cases presented are so compelling; the writing so riveting one cannot stand to put the book down for any reason. Louis Nizer was truly one of the greatest lawyers of all time and I suspect he was one of the greatest people of all time. Where is this kind of superior being today?

His descriptions of his preparation for the trials and the trials themselves made me frel as if I was present experiencing the work he was doing. Additionally, he presents his legal philosophy which I felt brought out the nobility of practicing law seeking justice and not just concerned with the economic benefit to the lawyer.

The real cases covered in this book are more entertaining and more bizarre than anything I've read from Earl Stanley Gardener. Real life is stranger than fiction and people really do strange things when they get into court.

The author covers several areas of his very diverse practice. This is not just a recollection of war stories. The book reads more like a series of lectures on legal practice. He explains how and why he did what he did. I hope more books by this author will be converted to Kindle format.

Against All OddsBy Anthony Mukwita

Humility Edgar Lungu has been known for many things but humility for a man of influence in a country where people often get over-consumed by their own self-importance sets him several paces apart from other politicians or national leaders. Observers have sometimes described his humility as his most admirable quality and, to many people - especially the common folk who make up the largest part of Zambia’s population - his most endearing attribute.

Tenacity If there was one word to describe Edgar Lungu as a late-blooming politician facing a vicious power struggle to replace Zambia’s fifth President Michael Sata, tenacious would be that word. He needed bags of it, first, to survive the bitterly fought internal war to win the Patriotic Front’s nomination to stand as its candidate in the 2015 Presidential election occasioned by Sata’s death and, later, to fend off arch-rival Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition UPND in another closely contested Presidential poll.

Politician Politicians make their names for any number of reasons or actions. Some for their ruthlessness, others for their brashness, cunning or indeed kindness. Edgar Lungu seems to have crafted a name for himself simply by cleverly playing the role of the political tyro who knew little about the game...the ‘green horn’ the opposition made the fatal mistake of underrating.

Peace-loving It is hard to imagine any other Zambian politician would so willingly have yielded to another the instruments of power left with them in accordance with the law by a sitting president, as Michael Sata did when he left Edgar Lungu to serve in his place the night he left for the UK to seek medical help in 2014. When Sata died in hospital, there were many 'expert' voices advising Lungu to keep hold onto the instruments of power, rather than decline to the incumbent Vice-President Guy Scott. Lungu happily handed over the instruments to a man who would then go on to do almost all in his powers to hinder his ambition to win the subsequent Presidential election. This is because he sought peace.

“I want to be remembered as an ordinary person who became President, a person who brought ordinary and human characteristics to the office of the Presidency…” Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Hot FM radio interview October 2015. By Anthony Mukwita.
