I have been teaching piano lessons for over thirty years. The "John W. Schaum Note Speller Book One" has proven to be the perfect resource and skills practice book for students who have difficulty learning notes; for students who have played instruments focusing on only one clef and not both Treble and Bass Clef, and especially for students who shirked learning note reading due to playing by ear or because of other listening/hand postion methods which avoid true reading skills. There are varied drills which can be used in so many creative ways.
My mother has been a piano teacher for over 30 years. She has taught all her gifted students with this book and other Schaum books... My children are now learning their notes and learning to understand the language of music from this book. For good theory music use Schaum.
very nice for kids learning their notes. I also bougt the hal leonard note speller books and this one gives you more bang for your buck. This book is filled with exercises from top to bottom of the page so it has more repetition. THe hal leonard is filled with more character drawings with little amount of exercises. Kids might find the hal leonard more animated, but definitely this is better buy for actually learning and writing your notes. My kids are 6 and 7 and are being taught the hal leonard music book 2 right now, so I decided to buy the hal leonard notespeller book. I didn't think they were bad, but my kids finished them within a couple of days and I wanted a more "complex" book. I play the piano as well and I have to say that for learning this is MUCH BETTER buy!
This book is a wonderful resource for any student learning to read music notation. While it is intended to be used for piano, it would certainly work for any instrument. There are a few pages devoted to treble and bass clef separately, but many pages have exercises using both notes. It is quite easy to skip the examples using the opposite clef, while still having many practice problems for students.Also, as a middle school music teacher, one of the biggest difficulties I encounter is students understanding that the shape of the note does not affect its pitch. This book provides many examples of different pitches using all types of rhythmic notes. Likewise, it also provides various rhythms to demonstrate how pitch and rhythmic notation work independently of each other. For the small cost of the book, I think it will provide the needed reinforcement for beginning music readers, no matter their age.
For the beginner student who wants a grasp on theory and note/key recognition. These daily or weekly exercises compliment any music program. Highly recommended for students in their second year of piano. The lessons are simple yet important in teaching the student how to read music. I was quite impressed with how this series really helped my son play piano.
This Book 1 note speller is really for an older child or adult who can quickly understand theory. It moves too quickly for a child that would normally be starting up piano lessons. The first few pages were fine, but it got hard very fast.
A great book to help learn notes for a beginning piano student. I bought on my own to help with note memorization and my instructor thought it was a great book to use.
I've used this notespeller with teaching piano for nearly 20 years now, and still love it for the basics of theory as much as when I started teaching. It is a fantastic resource for teaching basic beginning theory, without being boring. Reinforces necessary elements of theory, but is easy enough for even tiny learners...highly recommend! I've tried many theory series over the years and this one book is my favourite for beginners.
